About this Project and NFTs:

I’ve been learning about NFTs and I’m excited about what they can mean for how artists and writers sell and distribute their work. NFTs are still in their early stages of development and they still aren’t easy for non-technical users to adopt. But I believe they have the power to transform the way creative work is used online and will give artists and writers a way to take control of their work.

I made the NFT project below as a way to teach myself about this technology and as a sort of “proof-of-concept” for future development. I will be creating more content around how blockchain and smart contracts can help artists and writers and will, I think, disrupt the value proposition of online content, putting it back in the hands of creators.

NFTs and the Environment:

There has been a lot of press about how crypto and blockchain is bad for the environment. This is a serious concern, and much is being done to address it. Many modern blockchains have much less impact than older technologies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. You can read more at Clean NFTs.

The NFTs below were created using NFT-Maker Pro which works with the Cardano Blockchain. Cardano is a proof-of-stake network, as opposed to a proof-of-work network such as Bitcoin or Ethereum. Cardano was developed with security, sustainability, and minimal energy usage in mind. The Cardano Foundation is working toward becoming a carbon neutral blockchain with initiatives such as The Cardano Forest.

And now… the collection.

These “photopoems” were compiled from my blog and were first on display at Gallery 103 in Maplewood New Jersey in November, 2017.

Project Theme:
“The Greatest Weight”

“What if some day or night a demon were to steal into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: ‘This life as you now live it and have lived it you will have to live once again and innumerable times again; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything unspeakably small or great in your life must return to you, all in the same succession and sequence – even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned over again and again, and you with it, speck of dust!’ Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: ‘You are a god, and never have I heard anything more divine.’ If this thought gained power over you, as you are it would transform and possibly crush you; the question in each and every thing, ‘Do you want this again and innumerable times again?’ would lie on your actions as the greatest weight! Or how well disposed would you have to become to yourself and to life to long for no thing more fervently than for this ultimate eternal confirmation and seal?”
