We stayed four nights in Imperial Beach, south of San Diego. (A few miles south of much pricier Coronado on the western peninsula and only eight miles from Mexico). It's a little enclave of surfer and biker hang-outs. Also probably the only reasonably-affordable beach-front property left in California, if you're interested.
