I finished the lower box around the posts last week and painted the railings. Yesterday, I got the railings nailed into the columns just in time for the rain. I’ve been worried about the mailwoman using the steps in bad weather without a railing to hold on to. When I see her, she says “It’s good you know how to do this stuff.” And I say to her, “It’s on the job training, love.” She sings to the soul in her headset when she walks our neighborhood. But she turns down the volume to shoot the shit with me. She asks me how’s the writing. Because I get a lot of writing-related mail. I say, “It’s a lot like this front porch. Slow, but good.”
